The story starts with a symbolic fog as Teddy, a federal Marshall and his partner Chuck played by Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo respectively take a boat ride to Shutter Island where they are faced with the task of finding a patient missing from the asylum. Leonardo DiCaprio, has played his role to perfection as the investigator trapped in mysterious clues that open new doors every single time, leading him into a maze that finally leads him to doubting his own ability to think. The fact that it is all a game played out in the mind is brought out with perfection by Leonardo while Mark Ruffalo, is subtle and efficient while playing second fiddle and mostly reacting to the protagonist’s comments and actions.

The movie depicts more than an average influence of Alfred Hitchcock’s thrillers. Many of the dark shots with suspense waiting in the wings just like the impending storm could have been so easily a page in Hitchcock’s diaries. Yet Laeta kalogridis does excellently well in delivering the screenplay of the movie. Like most of the movies inspired from a book, this one too deviates every now and then deviates a bit from the bookish plot to add more effect, but overall stays true to the intent and bottom-line of the novel. Scorcese successfully creates an ambience full of fear, isolation and suffocation without resorting to the high grained picture of the common horror films. Instead bright colors and lush pictures accentuate the eeriness of the island that unravels dangers and hints of mystery at every point. Every image used in the movie, from the fort during Civil war times, the lighthouse, the caves and the cliffs, is shot in a way as to add to the dark foreboding of the movie.

Ben Kingsley and Max Von Sydow as the doctors in the mental asylum have portrayed their characters brilliantly with an aura of evil and wrong-doing around them. Ted Levine as the warden and Jackie Earle Haley have also played their roles to perfection, making the movie a great work as far as the efforts from the crew is concerned. A few members of the audience expecting the greatness of a Taxi Driver or Goodfellas might be left disappointed, nevertheless the film goes a long a way in reviving thriller movies, with a quality that leaves many other less noticed productions of the same genre much behind. At the end of the day, fear, phobia and tricks of the mind take center stage as the mystery slowly unfolds and the audience gets to see a different perspective as late as the last dialogue of the movie.
